  • Balanced Budgets:  Has fought for balanced budgets that led to four straight years of revenue surpluses without raising taxes.
 
  • Fiscal Conservatism:  Championed audit legislation which uncovered $1.4 billion sitting idle within the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and was put to work right away.
 
  • Rainy Day Fund:  Has worked to keep the state’s Rainy Day Fund in good shape so it is ready to be utilized to help preserve the state’s financial health during future financial downturns.
 
  • K-12 Education:  Supported efforts to bring accountability to the K-12 education system to ensure that our students receive a high quality education while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and excessive testing.
 
  • Higher Education:  Established a tuition moderation fund to provide incentives to public higher education institutions to keep their tuition affordable.
 
  • Tort Reform:  Supported and passed major tort reform legislation to keep frivolous lawsuit legal costs under control.
 
  • Veterans:  Implemented a real estate tax exemption for veterans with a 100% permanent and total, service-connected disability.
 
  • Public Safety:   Virginia State Police Association 2012 Legislator of the Year and as Chairman of the Militia, Police, and Public Safety Committee, has supported legislation to support the Commonwealth’s law enforcement officers and help ensure the safety of our communities and neighborhoods.
 
  • Sportsmen Issues:  Formed the Legislative Sportsman’s Caucus and has led it for 6 years.  This group has become the preeminent “watchdog” for pro-sportsmen issues, whose stature and influence of policy has promoted the best environment for Virginia’s Sportsman.
 
  • 2nd Amendment:  Successfully patroned the bill and fought for the repeal of the one-gun-a-month restriction that was targeted at lawful gun owners; a consistent A+ rating from the NRA.
 
  • Property Rights: Introduced legislation to protect the rights of Virginia farmers and growers from burdensome government overregulation.
 
  • Sanctity of Human Life:  A leader in protecting human life.
 
  • Environment:  Co-Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Commission and Chesapeake Bay Foundation Legislator of the Year in 2007 for work in developing a strategic plan to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.
 
  • Technology:  Virginia Biotechnology Association Legislator of the Year in 2011.
